For Mercer, it's the perfect place to open up the season as the veteran driver has raced at Hickory for most of his career and picked up two championships in the last two seasons. He also has 32 wins in the last three and half seasons on the historic 3/8 mile track against some of the toughest competition in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Late Model Stock Car division.
Mercer also knows that opening the season at his home track also puts the pressure on him and his team.
"We're really good at Hickory and everyone knows that," continued Mercer. "That also means that people expect us to run up front and contend for the win right out of the box and I think we can do that based on how well our tests have went so far."
When the series regulars including Mercer show up to Hickory Motor Speedway in Newton, NC on Friday, March 11th for an open test, all eyes will be on the veteran racer as other drivers will base how good they are off of the two-time track champion. Mercer and the rest of the UARA-STARS Series competitors will then hit the track for their first race on Saturday, March 12th.

Mercer Set to Open Season in New Series at Familiar Race Track
Gastonia, NC(March 10, 2011) -- Often times when a driver makes a move up from racing at one race track the majority of the time to a touring series, he doesn't find much familiarity with the cars and tracks and etc. However for Andy Mercer and his Mercer Racing Team, the first race in a new series will have him competing at a familiar track in a familiar car.
Not many touring series offer you the chance to race the same car you've been racing at your home track and even less of them race at most racers home tracks. For Mercer his move up to the UARA-STARS Series this season has him in the same car he raced to back to back track championships in at Hickory Motor Speedway, the site of the seasons first race for the tenth year series.
For Mercer it's the perfect place to start making his run at a touring series championship despite his lack of experience traveling with the series.
